AI Meets TI

New Competencies for a New Era

When the TI-92 arrived in Germany in 1996, it caused quite a stir in mathematics classrooms. Suddenly, a handheld device could manipulate algebraic expressions, solve equations, and draw graphs. The debate was intense: What happens to mathematics learning when a computer algebra system (CAS) can do part of the work?

Today, we know that CAS did not make mathematics education obsolete — it made something visible. What really matters is not routine calculation alone but understanding, modelling, interpreting, questioning, and making decisions.

With artificial intelligence (AI), we are facing a similar moment, but on a much broader scale. This time, it is not just one subject. AI can write text, explain concepts, analyze data, generate images, simulate dialogue, and suggest solutions.
So, the key question is not  “How do we stop students from using AI?” The real question is: “What competencies do young people need when AI becomes a natural part of their world?”

The Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) made this challenge very clear in their 2025 report, “What should teachers teach and students learn in a future of powerful AI?”: education systems need to rethink which knowledge, skills, attitudes, and values truly matter in a world of powerful AI. This is about more than AI literacy. It is about critical thinking, epistemic understanding, judgement, creativity, ethical responsibility, democratic participation, and the ability to deal productively with uncertainty.

Students must learn not to admire AI outputs but to question them. They need to distinguish between answers that sound convincing and knowledge that is reliable. They need to check sources, recognize assumptions, understand the limits of models, and decide when technology is helpful and when human thinking, empathy, and responsibility remain essential.

This is exactly where the T3 community has always been strong. It has never been about technology for its own sake. It has aways centered on using technology to make learning deeper, more visible, and more courageous.

Sharing Inspiration: AI Meets TI continues this tradition. We do not meet new technology with fear, nor with naive enthusiasm. We ask educational questions: What is changing? What remains essential? And what competencies do learners need to become not just users of AI, but capable, critical, and creative human beings in a technology-shaped world?

The introduction of CAS taught us an important lesson: When tools become more powerful, education does not become less important, it becomes more demanding. We are at such a moment again — arguably the most significant one in a generation. AI has already changed education, but as it reshapes what is possible in classrooms and beyond, let us commit to doing what we have always done: putting learners first. Our community has always risen to these moments, not by resisting change but by leading it — ultimately shaping the future of education. Now, more than ever, the T3 community is ready to answer that call.
